Acne Scarring
Precision resurfacing and collagen remodeling to reduce the appearance of acne scars and restore smooth, even skin texture.
About This Concern
Acne scarring is a long-term consequence of inflammatory acne that affects the dermal collagen and tissue architecture. Scars may be atrophic (depressed — including ice-pick, boxcar, and rolling types), hypertrophic (raised), or manifest as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and erythema. Each scar type responds to different treatments, which is why a proper assessment is essential before committing to a protocol. At FusionMed, we use advanced collagen-remodeling technologies to stimulate the skin's own repair mechanisms and progressively improve scar depth, texture, and tone.
Understanding the Cause
Common Causes
- ✦
Moderate to severe inflammatory acne that damages the dermis during the healing process, resulting in collagen loss and atrophic (depressed) scars
- ✦
Delay in treating active acne, allowing deeper inflammation and greater dermal injury before resolution
- ✦
Individual genetic factors influencing wound healing response — some skin types are more prone to scarring or post-inflammatory pigmentation
- ✦
Picking or squeezing active lesions, which introduces bacteria deeper into the follicle and significantly worsens the inflammatory injury
- ✦
Cystic and nodular acne, which causes greater dermal destruction than surface-level comedonal acne
- ✦
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — dark marks left after inflammation resolves — more common in medium to dark skin tones
Personalized Approach
Recommended Treatments
Morpheus8
Fractional RF microneedling that penetrates up to 8mm into the dermis and subdermal tissue. Effectively remodels scar tissue, stimulates significant collagen production, and improves both depressed and rolling acne scars with lasting results.

Microneedling
Collagen induction therapy that creates controlled micro-injuries to trigger the skin's natural repair response. Particularly effective for superficial atrophic scars, enlarged pores, and improving overall skin texture and tone.

RF Microneedling
Combines the mechanical collagen stimulation of microneedling with targeted RF energy at programmable dermal depths — producing deeper collagen remodeling and more significant textural improvement than standard microneedling alone.

Common Questions
FAQs
Can acne scars be fully removed?
Significant improvement — not complete elimination — is the realistic goal of acne scar treatment. Most patients achieve 50–80% improvement in scar depth and texture over a complete treatment course. The degree of improvement depends on scar type, severity, and individual healing response. Atrophic (depressed) scars respond best to fractional RF and collagen-induction therapies.
How many sessions are needed for acne scar treatment?
A minimum of 3–6 sessions is typically recommended for meaningful improvement. More severe or ice-pick scarring may require additional sessions. Treatments are spaced 4–6 weeks apart to allow full collagen remodeling between sessions. Results continue to improve for up to 6 months after the final treatment.
Which type of acne scar responds best to treatment?
Rolling and boxcar scars respond most favorably to fractional RF, microneedling, and collagen induction therapies. Ice-pick scars (narrow, deep) are more difficult to treat and may benefit from additional techniques such as subcision or punch excision performed by our physician. PIH (dark marks) responds well to IPL, chemical peels, and topical brightening agents.
Should I treat active acne before addressing scarring?
Yes. Active inflammatory acne should be managed first — or concurrently — before focusing on scar treatment. Performing resurfacing treatments over actively inflamed skin risks worsening the condition and creating new scarring. Our physician will assess your acne status and sequence treatment appropriately.
