Jaw Clenching & TMJ

Relax overactive jaw muscles to ease clenching, teeth grinding and jaw tension, with the added bonus of a softer, slimmer jawline.

About This Concern

Jaw clenching and teeth grinding, also called bruxism, are very common, and many people don't realize they do it until they notice jaw pain, headaches, worn teeth or a square, bulky jawline. Clenching often happens during sleep or in times of stress, and over time it can overwork the masseter muscles at the back of the jaw and strain the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull. At FusionMed, we use Botox to relax the overactive masseter muscles. This reduces the force of clenching and grinding, which can ease jaw tension, soreness and tension headaches, and help protect your teeth. Because the masseter muscles shrink when they're used less, many clients also enjoy a softer, slimmer, more V-shaped jawline. Treatment takes about 15 minutes with no downtime. We'll review your symptoms at your consultation and recommend seeing your dentist as well, so you get the most complete care.

Understanding the Cause

Common Causes

  • ✦

Stress and anxiety — the most common trigger, causing unconscious clenching during the day or at night

  • ✦

Sleep bruxism — grinding or clenching during sleep, often noticed by a partner or as morning jaw soreness and headaches

  • ✦

Overactive or enlarged masseter muscles — strong jaw muscles from habitual clenching or genetics, which can also give the jaw a square shape

  • ✦

Bite and alignment issues — an uneven bite can contribute to jaw strain and TMJ discomfort

  • ✦

Habits such as gum chewing, nail biting or clenching during exercise and concentration

  • ✦

Caffeine, alcohol and some medications, which can increase muscle tension and grinding

Common Questions

FAQs

Can Botox help with jaw clenching and teeth grinding?

Yes, many people find relief. Botox relaxes the masseter muscles so they can't clench as forcefully, which can reduce grinding, jaw soreness and tension headaches. Results vary, and we'll assess your symptoms at your consultation to see if it's right for you.

Does Botox help TMJ pain?

Botox can help ease TMJ discomfort that is caused or worsened by overactive jaw muscles and clenching. It doesn't fix structural joint problems, so we recommend also seeing your dentist or a TMJ specialist, and Botox can be one part of a wider plan.

Will it change the shape of my face?

It can, in a good way. As the masseter muscles relax and shrink, many clients notice a softer, slimmer jawline. We tailor the dose to your goals, whether you want mainly relief, jaw slimming, or both.

Will Botox affect my chewing or smile?

No. When performed correctly, Botox reduces the excess force of clenching while leaving normal chewing, speaking and smiling unaffected. Some clients notice their jaw tires slightly sooner with very tough foods for the first couple of weeks.

How long does it last?

Results usually last around 3–6 months. With regular treatments, the muscles often become weaker over time, so many clients find they can space out their appointments.

Do I still need a night guard?

Botox and a dental night guard work well together. A night guard protects your teeth, while Botox reduces the force behind the clenching. We recommend discussing a night guard with your dentist.
